Sleigh Your Christmas Captions With These Festive Wordplay Ideas
Discover creative festive wordplay ideas to make your Christmas captions shine and boost your social media engagement this holiday season

Deck the halls with festive phrases, falalalalalalalala! This time of year is an excellent opportunity to have fun with your content writing and spread some holiday cheer. The best thing about the holiday season is joy, after all.

Including festive phrases in your copy will make your audience smile* and help get your posts seen through the algorithm. How? Well, the longer people linger on your post in the feed, the more they share, like, and comment, and the more the algorithm will favour your content.

* Keep your audience and the context in mind, as festive phrases aren’t always appropriate. For example, “People are getting their tinsel in a tangle about these stats on gender-based violence” is not recommended.

You’ll find articles online with 100+ Christmas phrases and puns, but 90% of them are cringeworthy drivel, so don’t be fooled. We’ve boiled them down to some of the best. We’ve also included some of our favourite festive video ideas for TikTok and Instagram Reels.

Enjoy and have fun! 🎄

Christmas Wordplay

  • Don’t get your tinsel in a tangle

This is a great phrase to use when addressing a problem your business solves for your followers. You could also use this alongside How Tos or links to resources and support.

  • Make it a December to remember

Do you have an event happening in December? Or perhaps you have products or services that are specific to the season? This is a timebound phrase you can use to create some urgency.

  • ‘Tis the season to stand out

This is a good one to promote marketing services, photography, videography, design work, or anything that encourages your followers to promote themselves and attract attention.

  • Christmas mode: Activated

Use this phrase when sharing your festive office decorations, or pictures from the work Christmas party, to announce your Christmas offers or even to sign off for the holidays.

  • Get your jingle on

This is a fun and light-hearted phrase you can use to encourage your followers to get into the festive spirit and let their hair down. Do you have any calls-to-action that could work for this?

  • Jingle bells and all that jazz

We like this one because it’s Grinch proof, aka it’s acceptable to those who cringe at most Christmas wordplay. Want to acknowledge the season but quickly move on to deeper conversations? This is the one for you.

  • It’s sparkle season

In complete opposition to the previous example, this phrase is for posts that take the cute factor up a notch. You could use it for a personal LinkedIn post celebrating your wins for the year.

Use this TikTok audio to share some things, Christmas-related or not, that you hate. It should be tongue-in-cheek and relatable to your followers so keep them in mind. Don’t make the mistake of insulting people. Instead, your followers should smile and agree with you.

Here’s an example:

Fire In The Hole

This Instagram audio is a popular way to show a festive before and after. The idea is you throw a bauble at something and then cut to show it decorated for Christmas. People are using this to show off their Christmas trees and shop shelves, but you could use it to show a decorated office or a group of people changing from casual outfits to Christmas party clothes.
