How To Choose Your Social Media Manager

Ask yourself this question: how intelligent is your customer? If the answer is ‘a few sandwiches short of a picnic’ then this article is probably not for you.

If you’re still reading, I can only assume that your customer has a few brain cells. In which case, you need to hire a social media manager who is able to understand your business and the complexities of what you offer as well as why your customers buy from you and what they care about.

Social media management is a high level role. At the very least, your social media manager should have these three things: qualifications, experience and common sense. What makes choosing very difficult is that social media managers without a clue are very good at pretending to have a clue.

Here are a few tips to help you sort the wheat from the chaff:

Marketing Experience: What do they know about marketing, public relations and SEO? This is an all-encompassing role and they need to have all the relevant experience.

Social Trends: How much do they understand about the way people communicate online and do they keep up with the latest trends? You need to be able to trust them to choose the right social networks and tactics for your business.

Strategy: Do they ask about your customers, your existing marketing strategy and what you hope to achieve with social media? They should be asking you more questions than you ask them.

Passion: Are they enthusiastic about what they do? If they are full of ideas for promoting your business and itching to get started, they are probably motivated enough to get things done for you.

It’s not enough to choose a highly qualified and experienced social media manager. You need to find the right match for your business and the way you work.

Social media managers do not work for you, they work with you. Think of them as a new addition to your team and ensure that you get along well. A trial period is always a good idea and most social media managers will offer this.
